چکیده

Examining Priorities for a Primate Genome Project We agree with the premise of Edwin H. McConkey, Agit Varki, and cosignatories that "[a] primate genome project deserves high priority" in the U.S. biomedical research enterprise (Letters, 25 Aug., p. 1295), but we disagree with their selection of the chimpanzee as the focus for these efforts, and with the recommendation to commit resources to genome sequencing at this time.

The environmental genome project: ethical, legal, and social implications.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is supporting a multiyear research initiative examining genetic influences on environmental response. Proponents of this new initiative, known as the Environmental Genome Project, hope that the information learned will improve our understanding of environmentally associated diseases and allow clinicians and public health officials to targe...

A primate genome project deserves high priority.

The initial goals of the Human Genome Project (HGP), to sequence the human genome and identify its constituent genes, are on the verge of being achieved. However, the scientific community recognizes that sequencing must be followed by understanding the manifold functions of human genes throughout the life-span, in health and in disease. In a Science interview (News Focus, 31 Mar., p. 2396), Fra...

The evolutionary history of human DNA transposons: evidence for intense activity in the primate lineage.

Class 2, or DNA transposons, make up approximately 3% of the human genome, yet the evolutionary history of these elements has been largely overlooked and remains poorly understood. Here we carried out the first comprehensive analysis of the activity of human DNA transposons over the course of primate evolution using three independent computational methods. First, we conducted an exhaustive sear...

I-49: Human Y Chromosome ProteomeProject

The success of the Human Genome Project (HGP) has provided a blueprint for the approximately 20,000 gene-encoded proteins potentially active in all of the hundreds of cell types that make up the human body. Yet we still have limited knowledge about a majority of the gene-encoded proteins which are the “building blocks of life” and “cellular machinery”. It is estimated that for nearly half of th...

LINEs and SINEs of primate evolution.

The primate order is a monophyletic group thought to have diverged from the Euarchonta more than 65 mya. Recent paleontological and molecular evolution studies place the last common ancestor of primates even earlier (‡ 85 mya). More than 300 extant primate species are recognized today, clearly emphasizing their diversity and success. Our understanding of the evolution of primates and the compos...
